Profile of a Public Speaker

In January 2003, the fifth anniversary editions of CAMPUSToday newspapers will begin to be released. This is a milestone in the history of campus print media in North Carolina. In 1998, a Mass Communication student at Shaw University, Raleigh, won the best writer award in his department. Armed with his writing arsenal, he secured an interview date with News & Observer for a newsroom position. After his interview, he heard nothing about his new job with the newspaper.

He remembered his research into USA Today as well as News & Observer, and recollected that these papers were conceived of by individuals – Al Nuhart and Josephus Daniels respectively. He said, "If the best writer could not get a job with the best newspaper in town, them something is definitely wrong. I will start my own newspaper. Maybe in the next one hundred years, it will be one of the best newspapers around. I will leave a mandate behind, stating that the newspaper should seek out and hire winners of "Best Writer" awards from North Carolina’s universities."

In 1998 the maiden edition of CAMPUSToday was circulated to the universities and colleges throughout North Carolina. Since then, NC State University, Elizabeth City State University, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, to name just a few, have been sending their press releases and other news articles to CAMPUSToday.
